When I got my student loan, the first thing I wanted to do was buy myself new football boots and a PS4. Sadly though my mum had such a strange hold on my finances that I barely managed to get myself a chocolate bar before all the cash got spent on rent and books. Thankfully though, one woman is living out the dreams of students everywhere and is splashing the cash on herself.
Catherine Byrne decided she would use her student loan on something more useful than education – a £3,600 boob job. Catherine, who was only 22 at the time, blew £14,000 on surgery, Botox and fillers, after only one month of being at university. Talk about living the high life.
So with the loan money all gone, what happened to Catherine’s student days?
The Essex girl had applied to study psychology at the University of East London but says she had absolutely no intention of studying or getting a degree. Surprise surprise.
Catherine told the Sun: “At first I was shocked when I got in. I quickly applied for a student loan and was over the moon when I got my loan letter in the post.
“I already knew exactly what I was going to spend the money on.”
After spending two weeks attending lectures, the rest of the students were settling into university life. Catherine however, was planning her next move.
She said: “As soon as the money hit my account I booked in to have a breast enlargement in London and I quit my course. My new boobs made me feel a million times better about myself.
“I suddenly had loads more confidence and no longer felt insecure about the way I looked. It made me even more sure of my decision to use the money to invest in my body instead of my brain.
“I told my family and friends what I had done and they just laughed. They all know I’m always finding ways to get what I want — I don’t think they were surprised.”
The boob job was just the tip of the iceberg. Not content with scamming the government once, Catherine failed her first year, but persuaded her tutors to take her back (but only to get another loan). After using the excuse that she was ‘overwhelmed’ in first year, the uni gave her another chance, and she received a further £7,000 in the bank.
Talk about a golden money-spinning idea.
Spending £560 on Botox injections in her face and collagen to plump up her lips, Catherine also spent the money on clothes and a new car – without having to do any university work. Speaking about her scam, Catherine claims her new boobs are more than just something to make her happy.
“I’m the one who has really invested in my future because my bigger boobs have made me happier every single day.
“If I was going to have all that debt, I may as well have had something to show for it.”
So what’s the cherry on top of this awful awful cake?
Catherine doesn’t intent on paying back her debts. She’s been left with a huge £17,572 debt that she will have to pay back if and when she earns more than £17,000 a year. The clincher however is that the glamour model doesn’t see herself ever earning enough and hopes that in 25 years the whole debt will be written off.
Oh to be British!
