The Coconut Crab Is Like Something From Your Nightmares…Wait Until You See It In Action. This isn’t your ordinary sea crab. These things are HUGE and live on land. Yikes! The coconut crab is in the same family as the hermit crab, but there’s a huge difference in size. They can grow up to 3 feet long and weigh almost as much as 10 lbs.(via: dose, wired)
They can live up to 60 years old.
Their name comes from their obsession with eating coconuts.
They’re known to scale tall trees, just to cut down one or two coconuts.
Their claws are strong enough to break through the coconut’s hard shell.
They don’t strictly eat coconuts. They also survive off of other fruits, nuts and seeds.
Although they look extremely intimidating, these big crabs are actually docile creatures…that is, until you corner one and it feels like it’s in danger.
But even knowing that, I don’t think you’ll be any less afraid of encountering one.
Believe it or not, coconut crabs will drown if submerged in water for too long. So, they’ve completely adapted to living on land.
And lucky for most of us, they can’t be found everywhere. They mostly inhabit islands around the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean.
